Erectile dysfunction or male impotence is the condition in which a man does not have the ability to achieve or maintain an erection which is vital for a satisfying sexual intercourse. Many people falsely believe that some kind of a physical problem is the direct cause of impotence or sexual dysfunction. But this is not so; the mind has an equally important part to play in this process and leads to a condition known as psychological impotence.

There is a variety of psychological or emotional factors that can cause psychological impotence or erectile dysfunction in men. One important and a very common factor is performance anxiety; this is seen in men who get stressed or anxious during sexual performance due to increased mental pressure. Stress can lead to elevated levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline which then act as inhibitors of erection.

Depression and stress are the other two main culprits of psychological impotence in men. Stress is a highly prominent emotional factor that can deter your sexual performance. In addition to increasing the levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline, it also lowers the level of testosterone, the male sex hormone. This directly results in a lowered sex drive and libido which in turn leads to psychological impotence and erectile dysfunction. Depression is another leading cause of impotency; hence sexual problems can be encountered in most people who are on medications for depression.

Another very important factor for psychological impotence is guilt. This can stem from various reasons like extra-marital affairs or from the thought of not being able to sexually satisfy your partner. Some other causes of sexual dysfunction are a lack of interest in your partner or in the relationship, childhood abuse or sexual trauma that acts as a mental block to perform or indulge in a satisfying sexual act.

The most important thing to do if you suffer from psychological impotence is to find out the root cause of your problem and seek professional help.
