In spite of the innumerable reports and studies stating about the dangerous effects of smoking, this habit is still very prevalent among men worldwide. Cigarette smoke contains many harmful chemicals and toxins like nicotine and tar that can cause various health problems like bronchitis and lung cancer. In addition to these, it can also wreak havoc on your sexual life causing male impotence. Let us take a look at what is the connection between smoking and impotence.

There have been many scientific studies that have proven the causative relationship between smoking and impotence or erectile dysfunction in males. An erection is usually attained when a man is sexually excited or aroused. What actually happens during arousal is that the body temperature rises which causes an increase in the force of blood supply to all the parts of the body especially the penis and surrounding regions. This elevates the nitric oxide level which in turn causes more blood to enter the penis leading to a full and hard erection. The relationship between smoking and impotence is that the harmful toxins present in the cigarette smoke block the main arteries and affect the blood flow.

When the blood circulation is inadequate, the nitric oxide levels also fall leading to a failed erection. This is the link between smoking and impotence in men. In addition to sexual dysfunction, nicotine also affects the valve mechanism of the penis which can affect the ability of the erectile tissue to store blood. Smoking can also adversely affect the sperm count which is one of the leading causes of male infertility.

Quitting this bad habit may not be an easy thing to do; but remember the connection between smoking and impotence every time you pick up a cigarette. Exercise will power or seek professional help to get rid of this dangerous and unhealthy habit at the earliest.
