Nutrition – Are we Getting Enough These Days?

Nutrition is the branch of science that deals with food and the way in which our body utilizes food as a vehicle for growth and development. Macronutrients required for our body include proteins, carbohydrates and fats and micronutrients include vitamins and minerals. Good health requires an adequate supply of both micro and macronutrients in our daily diet.

Today’s generation suffers from poor nutrition due to the junk food fad. These types of food contain very less nutrients and more of fat; hence there is an alarming increase in the rate of obesity among children these days. Increased consumption of soft drinks and beverages are also taking a toll on the health of today’s youth. Lack of proper nutrition also leads to an unhappy mind and body finally resulting in various forms of ailments.

Food rich in nutrition include cereals, pulses, raw vegetables and fruits. A hearty breakfast is the primary requisite to good health; an ideal breakfast should contain some kind of cereal, two or three slices of fruit and a glass of milk. Lunch should consist of a portion of rice, a serving of vegetables, fish or meat and a cup of curd or yoghurt and similarly dinner should consist of rice or roti along with a serving of vegetables. Good nutrition is very essential not just for physical well-being but also for emotional and mental well-being.

People are letting go of healthy nutrition these days where time has become money and fast food restaurants are springing up at every nook and corner. But remember; only a healthy body can house a healthy mind. Consume a nutritious and healthy diet to build immunity and also to prevent obesity. Include more green leafy vegetables, nuts, whole grain cereals and pulses in your daily food to keep up your energy level to see you through the day’s activities.
