Male impotence is called, in medical fraternity, as Erectile Dysfunction (ED). It is one of most common disease affecting men world over. Estimates claim that half of the men above the age of 40 suffer from this condition. They complain that the erection of their penis does not stay longer and this affects their sexual life adversely.

For ages, sexual prowess has had been the measure of the success and masculinity of men across the globe. Hence, the very fact of suffering from such an inability badly affects the psyche of a man. The causes of sexual impotence, as identified by the doctors worldwide, can be physical, psychological or both.

The physical causes of impotence are broadly classified as those due to hormonal diseases, physical damage, nerve disorders, blood vessel disorders and brain disorders. The metabolic or hormonal diseases include testosterone deficiency, liver disease, kidney disease, pituitary disorder, testicle disorder, etc. Physical damage to the penis, pelvic region, testicles, spinal cord, brain or bladder can also, at times, become reasons for male impotence. Nerve disorders in the penis, spinal cord as well as other nerve disorders like alcoholic neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, etc also give rise to male impotence.

Blood disorders such as arteriosclerosis, high blood pressure, vascular disease, etc and brain disorders like brain stroke, brain tumour, Parkinson’s disease, etc are also some the causes of impotence in men.

Psychological causes of impotence include fear, anxiety, stress, fatigue, low self-esteem, depression, guilt, etc. Majority of the people suffering from male impotence are victims of such psychological elements and they unknowingly start performing poorly in their sex life. These causes can be ridden off only by counseling. The physical causes are treated by proper medication and for some specific cases, even medical surgery is advised. Usually, when the physical causes disrupting the sexual life occur, the patient unknowingly falls prey to other psychological barriers too and thus making the problem even more complicated.

Causes of male impotence are many as seen above and hence, before being subjected to any kind of medication, the exact cause for this disease needs to be diagnosed properly.
